Calgary city council members joined firefighters on Friday to get a crash course in what they do every day at Fire Ops 101. The event, hosted by the Calgary Fire Department (CFD), gave councillors a hands-on experience of the challenges and skills required in firefighting operations.
Hands-On Experience for Council Members
During the training session, councillors participated in simulated fire scenarios, learned about equipment usage, and understood the decision-making processes under pressure. The exercise aimed to foster better understanding between the council and the fire department, ensuring informed policy-making for public safety.
Building Stronger Community Ties
Fire Ops 101 is part of an ongoing effort to strengthen relationships between first responders and city leaders. By experiencing the physical and mental demands of firefighting, councillors gain valuable insights into resource needs and operational challenges.
The event concluded with a debriefing session where councillors shared their takeaways. Many expressed newfound respect for the firefighters' dedication and the importance of adequate support for emergency services.
