The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) have requested personnel in Ottawa's national capital region to return deployment gear such as patrol packs and tactical vests to address critical equipment shortages. A Department of National Defence spokesperson confirmed the initiative to the National Post on Thursday.
Personnel not involved in active deployment operations do not require this equipment for their day-to-day duties, according to Nick Drescher Brown, a media relations officer with National Defence. The move is intended to help address potential shortfalls of items, particularly those in highly demanded sizes, and will enable the CAF to prioritize equipping personnel in deployable units.
Details of the Request
The request was emailed to roughly 10,000 CAF members. The email, titled 'Return of equipment and clothing items,' specifies that the Army is asking personnel from all branches—army, air force, and navy—to return the following items:
- Rucksacks (new model, CTS) with the sleeping bag compression bag and both utility pouches
- Patrol packs (small pack assembly) with the four utility pouches
- Tactical vests with the two additional pouches
- Fragmentation vests
The items are to be collected on May 19, 20, and 21 at a CAF clothing depot in Ottawa's west end. The email states that all personnel not posted to a deployable unit are required to return the full set of equipment on the specified dates, emphasizing that cooperation is essential to the success of the effort.
The request was sent on behalf of Colonel J.R. Toope, Commander of Canadian Forces Support Group (Ottawa-Gatineau) and Base Commander of Canadian Forces Base Ottawa-Gatineau.
Historical Context
This is not the first time such a request has been made. In 2018, a similar appeal was published in Canadian Military Family Magazine. Brown noted that the motivation was the same: the CAF's numbers were growing then, as they are now.
Recent reports indicate that applications to Canada's armed forces surged by 12.9% in the past eight months, and the government awarded a $307 million contract to Colt Canada to manufacture over 65,000 rifles for the CAF. These developments underscore the ongoing need to ensure equipment availability for deployable units.
