Daniel Rochefort, a Montreal lawyer, has been accused of luring a child online and producing child sexual abuse material, according to Montreal police. The allegations have sent shockwaves through the legal community and raised concerns about online child safety.
Charges and Investigation
The Service de Police de la Ville de Montreal (SPVM) announced the charges on May 13, 2026. Rochefort, whose age was not disclosed, faces multiple counts including luring a child via a computer system and making or publishing child pornography. Police allege that the offenses occurred over a period of time, targeting a minor under the age of 16.
Authorities began investigating after receiving a tip from a cyber-tipline report. The investigation led to a search of Rochefort's residence and the seizure of electronic devices. Forensic analysis of these devices uncovered evidence supporting the charges.
Police Appeal for Additional Victims
Inspector David Bertrand of the SPVM's sex crimes unit stated that investigators believe there may be other victims who have not yet come forward. “We are urging anyone who may have been in contact with Mr. Rochefort and experienced similar situations to contact us,” he said during a press conference. The police have set up a dedicated hotline for tips.
Rochefort was arrested on May 12 and has since been released on conditions, including a ban from using the internet and being in contact with minors. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 10.
Legal Community Reaction
The Barreau du Quebec, the province's law society, confirmed that Rochefort has been a member in good standing since 2010. In a statement, the Barreau said it is monitoring the situation and will take appropriate disciplinary action if necessary. “The allegations are deeply troubling and contrary to the values of our profession,” the statement read.
Rochefort's law firm, where he practiced corporate law, has distanced itself from the allegations. A spokesperson said Rochefort has been suspended pending the outcome of the legal proceedings.
Online Safety Concerns
This case highlights the ongoing issue of online child exploitation. According to the Canadian Centre for Child Protection, reports of online luring have increased significantly in recent years. Experts emphasize the importance of parental supervision and digital literacy to protect children from such predators.
The SPVM encourages anyone with information to contact their local police or Cybertip.ca, Canada's national tipline for reporting online child sexual abuse.
