Gingrich Warns Republicans Face Midterm Loss Without Change
Gingrich: Republicans Will Lose Midterms If Nothing Changes

Newt Gingrich, a longtime Republican insider and key ally of President Donald Trump, has issued a stark warning to his party just six months before the upcoming midterm elections. The former House Speaker, who masterminded the GOP takeover of the House during the 1994 midterms, told The New York Times that if the election were held in May, Republicans would lose.

Gingrich Calls for Improved Communication

Gingrich emphasized that the party needs to gain a better grasp of reality and significantly enhance its communication strategies. He highlighted the ongoing war, affordability concerns, and rising gasoline prices as critical issues that must be addressed for the party to succeed. “The war, the sense of affordability and gasoline — some of that has to be cleared up in order to win,” Gingrich stated. He added that if conditions do not improve, he would start tearing his hair out.

Trump's Campaign Promises vs. Reality

During his 2024 campaign, Donald Trump pledged to reduce the cost of living and oppose what he termed “endless” wars. However, prices have continued to climb, with gasoline now more than $1 per gallon higher than a year ago. Additionally, Trump has deployed the military in Venezuela, initiated a conflict with Iran, and repeatedly threatened Cuba. These actions have contributed to a significant decline in his popularity, with his approval rating dropping to a new low of just 34% in the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll.

Impact on Republican Prospects

This downturn in public support has dimmed Republican hopes of retaining their narrow majority in the House. Furthermore, a growing number of analysts now believe that the Senate may also become competitive, potentially shifting the balance of power.
