Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville fired back at Donald Trump on Wednesday after the president blasted him in a Truth Social post — and ended up challenging him to a debate.
Trump's Attack
Trump had lashed out a day earlier, calling Carville a “wacko” for supporting proposals such as granting statehood to Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico and expanding the Supreme Court.
“Wacko James Carville, a so-called Democrat ‘strategist,’ wants the Democrats to make D.C. and Puerto Rico States and, most importantly, pack the Supreme Court, putting 13 Justices on the Court,” Trump wrote. “If they pull off adding these two States, these Country Destroying Sleazebags will dominate politics in America, if we even have a Nation left, for 100 years (TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER!).”
Carville's Response
Carville addressed Trump’s attack on his “Politicon” podcast. He framed his role as teaching people about what he sees as structural imbalances in U.S. politics, pointing to what he believes is a lack of voter awareness on issues such as the popular vote in presidential elections, Senate representation and a lack of transparency with the Supreme Court.
He challenged conservative news outlets such as Fox News and Newsmax to invite him onto their shows so that he could explain “what the truth is about the United States,” but doubted they would.
The Debate Challenge
Carville’s co-host Al Hunt suggested Carville doesn’t “clear your schedule” for the invites because “I have a feeling they’re not interested in hearing it.” Hunt added: “But I think if Mr. Trump feels so strongly about this, he ought to challenge you to a debate. You could do it on his terms, wherever he wants to do it. Mar-a-Lago.”
“Any time,” said Carville, before mockingly saying Trump could “have a designate.” Hunt concluded: “Alright, guys. Stay tuned. It could be Trump v. Carville.”
