In a significant boost for the European defence technology sector, German drone manufacturer Quantum Systems has tripled its valuation to a staggering €3 billion. The company, which counts billionaire investor Peter Thiel among its backers, secured €180 million in a new funding round announced this week.
Rapid Growth Amid Geopolitical Demand
The funding round was led by Balderton Capital and represents a dramatic increase from the company's valuation just last May. Co-chief executive Sven Kruck confirmed the details during a press call on Thursday, noting that the new investment validates earlier reports from Bloomberg News.
Quantum Systems was founded in 2015 by former German army pilot Florian Seibel with the mission of producing dual-use unmanned aerial vehicles. The company's surveillance drones have become particularly crucial for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia, driving substantial revenue growth since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.
Expanding Capabilities and Future Plans
The fresh capital injection will enable Quantum Systems to significantly expand its manufacturing capabilities and accelerate development of new technologies. According to Kruck, the company plans to begin selling counter-drone systems next year, marking an important expansion of its product portfolio.
The Munich-based startup is part of a growing cohort of German defence technology companies, including Helsing and Stark Defence, that are working to equip European militaries with advanced weaponry. The war in Ukraine has demonstrated the critical importance of drone technology in modern warfare, creating unprecedented demand for Quantum Systems' products.
Strong Investor Backing
Beyond Thiel's support, Quantum Systems has attracted investment from prominent backers including Porsche Automobil Holding SE and Notion Capital. This diverse investor base underscores confidence in both the company's technology and the broader defence technology market in Europe.
The company's success reflects a broader trend of increased investment in European defence capabilities as geopolitical tensions continue to shape global security priorities. With this latest funding round, Quantum Systems is positioned to play an increasingly important role in strengthening Europe's military technology infrastructure.
