Russian President Vladimir Putin hailed the successful test launch of a new ballistic missile on Tuesday, calling it the world's most powerful weapon. The Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile was launched from a silo in southern Russia, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.
Strategic Significance
Speaking via video link, Putin stated that the new missile has unique characteristics and is capable of overcoming any existing missile defense systems. He emphasized that the Sarmat will significantly enhance Russia's strategic nuclear forces and ensure the country's security for decades to come.
Colonel General Sergei Karakayev, commander of the Russian Strategic Missile Forces, reported to Putin on the successful test, noting that the missile's flight characteristics were confirmed during the launch. The Sarmat is designed to replace the aging Voyevoda missile system, which has been in service since the Soviet era.
Technical Capabilities
The Sarmat is a heavy intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads. It has a range of over 11,000 kilometers and can reach targets across the globe. The missile is also equipped with advanced countermeasures against missile defense systems.
Western analysts have expressed concern over the new missile, as it represents a significant upgrade to Russia's nuclear arsenal. The test launch comes amid heightened tensions between Russia and NATO over the conflict in Ukraine.
Putin's announcement was met with praise from Russian officials, who described the Sarmat as a key component of the country's nuclear deterrent. The missile is expected to be deployed by the end of the year.
