An altercation at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary has resulted in the death of one inmate and injuries to two others, according to the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC). The incident occurred in the maximum-security unit on Tuesday, prompting an immediate lockdown and modification of operations to ensure safety.
CSC reported that no staff members were harmed during the incident. The injured inmates required outside medical assistance; one was treated and returned to the institution later that evening, while the other remains hospitalized.
Victim identified
The deceased inmate has been identified as Horace Bear, who had been serving a sentence of two years, nine months and 24 days since December 13, 2024. His next of kin have been notified. As per standard procedure, CSC is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the death.
Investigation underway
The maximum-security unit remains on lockdown as CSC and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police conduct investigations. CSC stated that operations were modified to maintain the safety of the institution, staff, and inmates.
This incident underscores ongoing challenges within correctional facilities, where altercations can lead to serious consequences. The Saskatchewan Penitentiary, located in Prince Albert, is a multi-level security institution housing a range of offenders.
