The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has released a new analysis estimating that President Donald Trump's proposed space-based missile defense system, dubbed the 'Golden Dome for America,' could cost $1.2 trillion over a 20-year period. This figure is significantly higher than the $175 billion price tag initially suggested by Trump last year.
CBO Report Details
The nonpartisan CBO report, published Tuesday, describes its analysis as 'one illustrative approach rather than an estimate of a specific Administration proposal.' The report notes that the lack of detailed information from the Defense Department about the system's components and deployment plans makes it impossible to estimate long-term costs accurately.
Executive Order and Justification
Trump ordered the development of the Golden Dome via an executive order during his first week in office, stating that he expected the system to be 'fully operational before the end of my term,' which ends in January 2029. He justified the initiative by citing the increasing complexity and intensity of threats from peer and near-peer adversaries developing next-generation delivery systems.
Inspiration from Israel's Iron Dome
The concept for the Golden Dome draws partial inspiration from Israel's multitiered defense systems, often collectively referred to as the 'Iron Dome,' which proved effective in defending against rocket and missile fire from Iran and allied militant groups. The U.S. version is envisioned to include both ground- and space-based capabilities capable of detecting, intercepting, and stopping missiles at all major stages of a potential attack.
Congressional Funding and Criticism
Congress has already approved approximately $24 billion for the missile defense initiative through a Republican-backed tax and spending measure signed into law last summer. However, critics question the escalating costs. Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., who requested the CBO estimate, called the project 'nothing more than a massive giveaway to defense contractors paid for entirely by working Americans.'
Affordability Concerns
Gen. Michael A. Guetlein, director of the Golden Dome project and a U.S. Space Force general, testified before lawmakers last month regarding costs. He criticized estimates based on legacy systems, stating, 'That is not what Golden Dome is doing. We are laser focused on affordability.'
Previous Cost Estimates
The president initially claimed in May 2024 that the Golden Dome would cost $175 billion. However, the CBO estimated last year that just the space-based components could cost as much as $542 billion over the next 20 years. The latest analysis suggests the total cost could be even higher, reaching $1.2 trillion over two decades.
