Clashes at Colombo Prison Leave 8 Dead
At least eight inmates were killed and more than 40 others injured in violent clashes between rival gangs at a prison in Sri Lanka's capital Colombo on Tuesday, according to police officials. The fighting broke out in the high-security section of the Welikada Prison, a facility known for housing some of the country's most dangerous criminals.
Police spokesman Senior Superintendent Ajith Rohana said the violence erupted around midday when inmates from two opposing factions attacked each other with makeshift weapons, including sharpened metal rods and broken furniture. Prison guards attempted to intervene but were overwhelmed by the scale of the confrontation.
Emergency Response and Investigation
Special task force officers and riot police were deployed to regain control of the facility. Authorities have launched an investigation to identify the instigators and determine the cause of the clash. Preliminary reports suggest the violence was sparked by a dispute over control of drug trafficking within the prison.
Health officials confirmed that the injured inmates were taken to the National Hospital of Sri Lanka, with several in critical condition. Prison officials have imposed a lockdown on the affected section and suspended all visitation rights pending further security assessments.
Overcrowding and Security Concerns
The Welikada Prison, built to hold about 1,500 inmates, currently houses over 4,000 prisoners, contributing to chronic overcrowding and tension. Human rights groups have repeatedly called for reforms to address prison conditions and reduce violence. This incident marks one of the deadliest prison clashes in Sri Lanka in recent years, highlighting ongoing challenges within the country's correctional system.
