Air Canada Employee Accused of Drug Smuggling Scheme Using Passenger Bag Tags
An Air Canada employee has been charged in a startling case involving the alleged use of passenger bag tags to smuggle a significant quantity of cannabis to Germany. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced the charges on Monday, revealing that the airline staffer is accused of exploiting her position to facilitate the illegal export of drugs.
Discovery at Toronto Pearson International Airport
The investigation began on February 19 when border agents at Toronto Pearson International Airport discovered 33 kilograms of weed in two checked suitcases. These suitcases appeared to belong to German citizens who were scheduled to fly back to Germany. Initially, the passengers were arrested, but both denied ownership of the identical luggage, claiming they had not checked those items.
Police later determined that the passengers were indeed unaware of the contents. According to the RCMP, an Air Canada employee working in the baggage room had placed luggage tags with the unsuspecting passengers' names onto the suitcases containing the cannabis. This deceptive tactic allowed the drugs to be linked to innocent travelers, complicating the initial stages of the investigation.
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
The RCMP released the two German passengers and shifted their focus to the Air Canada employee, identified as Atasha Weathley, a 32-year-old from Mississauga. Weathley has been charged with possession for the purpose of export and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence. She was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in a Brampton court on April 10 to face these allegations.
In a press release, Supt. Dale Foote of the RCMP emphasized the seriousness of the case. "This investigation demonstrates the commitment of the RCMP and Canada Border Services Agency to protecting the integrity of Canada’s cross‑border air transportation system," Foote stated. "Individuals who attempt to exploit their position of trust within the aviation industry to facilitate illegal activity will be held accountable. We will continue to work closely with law enforcement and industry partners to prevent, detect and disrupt criminal activity at our borders."
