Border-Hopping Cat Louis Gets Custom Traffic Sign in South Surrey
A fearless feline named Louis Vuitton is capturing hearts and slowing traffic in South Surrey, British Columbia, with his daring international adventures. The border-hopping cat has become such a local sensation that neighbors have installed a handmade warning sign to alert drivers of his presence on Zero Avenue.
Local Craftsman Creates Unique Warning Sign
The custom traffic sign was crafted by local artisan Bob Christy, known for his whimsical Stumpies characters made from scrap wood. The sign features a small wooden cat figure and serves as a fitting tribute to Louis, who casually crosses between Canada and the United States without regard for international boundaries.
"The sign was created to serve as a warning to drivers to watch out for this intrepid feline," according to CTV News Vancouver. The street already has speed bumps enforcing a 30 km/h limit, but now motorists receive an extra reminder to proceed cautiously because Louis might be making one of his frequent border crossings.
Louis's International Routine
Louis has gained internet fame for his near-daily trips across the border, drawing global attention for his casual movement between British Columbia and Washington state. Despite strict border regulations and surveillance from U.S. officials, Louis simply hops over a narrow ditch that marks the international boundary.
According to his owner Deb Tate, Louis wasn't always such a rebel but has always been "extremely friendly." Speaking to CBC Radio's As It Happens, Tate explained that Louis loves people on both sides of the border and will approach strangers for attention and belly rubs before continuing his daily adventures.
Simple Yet Bold Border Crossing
Louis's route is surprisingly straightforward. On the Canadian side, he lives in a row of homes along Zero Avenue. On the American side lies the open green space of Peace Arch Historical State Park. There are no fences or barriers—just a shallow ditch and a road separating the two countries, though the area remains heavily monitored with cameras and border patrol officers.
None of this surveillance deters Louis. He moves back and forth with complete confidence, and neighbors report that he even hunts in the United States and brings his catches back into Canada, bypassing customs entirely.
"He doesn't go through customs. He's got a pawsport," one resident joked to ABC News, highlighting the cat's disregard for international travel regulations.
From Local Celebrity to Internet Sensation
Louis's rise to fame began when a viral Instagram video showed him prowling the border area. The video captured global attention with the caption: "There's a cat that doesn't really give a f— about borders."
Now approaching his sixth birthday on Canada Day, Louis has fully embraced his celebrity status. His daily border-hopping adventures continue to delight locals and internet followers alike, proving that sometimes the most ordinary creatures can lead extraordinary lives that transcend international boundaries.
