A New Spiritual Leader for Edmonton's Catholic Community
The Vatican has made a significant announcement for the Catholic faithful in Edmonton. On November 21, it was revealed that Pope Leo XIV has selected Bishop Stephen A. Hero as the next Archbishop of Edmonton. Bishop Hero, who currently leads the Diocese of Prince Albert in Saskatchewan, will become the eighth archbishop in the city's history.
Homecoming for a Local Priest
For Archbishop-Designate Hero, this appointment marks a poignant return to his roots. He grew up in Edmonton after moving from Quebec at the age of ten and was ordained a priest for the archdiocese in the year 2000. In a heartfelt message, he expressed his humility and gratitude for the trust placed in him, stating his eagerness to serve the community that played a fundamental role in shaping his life and vocation.
His extensive background includes: parish ministry, vocations work, and leadership at St. Joseph Seminary, where he served as Rector from 2012 until his episcopal appointment to Prince Albert in 2021.
Path to the Installation in 2026
The official installation ceremony is scheduled for January 23, 2026, and will be held at the historic St. Joseph’s Basilica. Until that time, Reverend Paul Kavanagh will continue in his role as Administrator of the Archdiocese, a position he has held since Archbishop Richard Smith's departure for Vancouver.
Father Kavanagh has publicly welcomed the appointment, offering prayers and support on behalf of the local clergy and parishioners, and describing the incoming archbishop as a true gift to the local church. As Bishop Hero prepares for his new mission, he also acknowledged the strong bonds formed in Prince Albert, thanking the community for their generosity and friendship.
