Toronto Waives Adoption Fees for Large Dogs to Find Forever Homes
Toronto Waives Adoption Fees for Large Dogs (04.04.2026)

Toronto Animal Services is launching a special initiative this month to help big dogs find their forever homes, with adoption fees waived for canines over 50 pounds or puppies expected to reach that size. The campaign runs until April 23, 2026, across the city's three shelters, aiming to address the longer shelter stays often faced by larger breeds.

Addressing the Challenges for Big Dogs

Elana Trainoff, partnerships manager at Toronto Animal Services, explained that bigger dogs typically spend one-and-a-half to two times longer in shelters compared to other animals. "It's typically through no fault of their own," she said, noting common misconceptions that deter potential adopters.

"I think there's sort of a trepidation for people to get a big dog, thinking that they're more work, they need more exercise, they're going to be more expensive, they need more space," Trainoff stated. However, she emphasized that this isn't necessarily true for every dog, encouraging people to visit shelters and learn individual animals' stories and needs.

Finding the Right Match

Trainoff stressed the importance of understanding household dynamics before adoption. Key considerations include:

  • Work arrangements (from home or out of home)
  • Living space size and outdoor access
  • Activity levels and available time
  • Family composition including children and other pets

"I think once people understand what it is that they want and need and have the capacity for, then they're in a better position to search out the right fit for them," she advised.

The Adoption Process

Prospective adopters can view available dogs online at toronto.ca/adoptapet and schedule appointments for meet-and-greets. Trainoff recommends bringing all family members, including children and existing pets, to ensure compatibility.

"It's kind of like dating, right?" she said with a laugh. "You have to meet them to see if the vibes work." Successful matches often allow same-day adoptions, with all dogs being spayed or neutered and microchipped before going home.

Community Support and Success Stories

For the second consecutive year, GTA-based pet food supplier NutriCanine is supporting the campaign by providing free initial orders to all dogs adopted in Toronto during this period, regardless of shelter. Adoptive families can register at Nutricanine.ca using their adoption papers.

Trainoff highlighted Ayla, a boxer mix who embodies the campaign's message. "She is the kindest, most gentle, sweetest dog I have ever met," she described. "She's the biggest couch potato. All she wants to do is lie in your lap, lie in your arms, give you kisses, and snuggle on a sofa."

The program successfully found homes for 58 dogs in Toronto last year, and organizers hope to exceed that number in 2026. For those not ready to adopt, the shelter continues to accept applications for foster homes to help animals avoid shelter environments altogether.
