Picnic with Therapy Horses at VTRA Fundraiser in Saanichton

The Victoria Therapeutic Riding Association (VTRA) is hosting a unique community event titled 'Picnic with the Herd' on July 20, 2026, at its facility in Saanichton, B.C. The fundraiser invites families and individuals to enjoy a picnic alongside therapy horses, with proceeds supporting VTRA's equine-assisted programs for individuals with disabilities.

Event Details and Activities

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the VTRA stables, located at 7600 E. Saanich Road. Attendees can bring their own picnic blankets and lunches, or purchase food from local vendors. Activities include guided meet-and-greets with therapy horses, grooming demonstrations, and educational talks about the benefits of equine therapy. Children's activities, such as face painting and horse-themed crafts, will also be available.

According to VTRA executive director Sarah Mitchell, the event aims to raise awareness about the organization's work while providing a relaxing day for the community. 'Our horses have a remarkable ability to connect with people, and this picnic is a chance for everyone to experience that connection firsthand,' Mitchell said.

Supporting Equine Therapy Programs

All proceeds from the event will go toward VTRA's therapeutic riding programs, which serve over 200 clients annually, including children and adults with physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges. The organization relies on donations and fundraising to cover the costs of horse care, facility maintenance, and specialized equipment.

VTRA has been operating for over 30 years and is accredited by Equine Canada. The association's programs are led by certified instructors and volunteers, and they have been shown to improve participants' balance, coordination, and confidence.

How to Participate

Tickets are available online for $10 per person or $25 per family. Children under five attend free. The event is rain or shine, and attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes for safety around the horses. Parking is available on-site.

For more information or to purchase tickets, visit the VTRA website or call the office at 250-652-0166. The association also welcomes volunteers and donations year-round.
