For decades, Vancouver's Commercial Drive was synonymous with Italian cuisine, a vibrant reflection of the neighborhood's cultural roots. Today, that identity has expanded dramatically, transforming "The Drive" into a global culinary destination where Italian traditions share the stage with flavors from around the world.
A Neighborhood in Flux
Lillian Reimer, proprietor of Attic Treasures, has witnessed this evolution firsthand. With nearly 40 years of working and dining on Commercial Drive, she recalls when Italian eateries like Federicos defined the dining landscape. "This was Little Italy," Reimer notes while enjoying a panini from Bosa Foods. "Now, there is a lot more to choose from."
The shift mirrors broader demographic changes in Vancouver, where new residents and evolving tastes have introduced diverse culinary options. Despite development pressures and the closure of some longtime favorites, Commercial Drive maintains its bohemian, family-friendly character and commitment to locally owned businesses.
Culinary Highlights Along The Drive
From the Commercial-Broadway SkyTrain station northward, food enthusiasts discover an impressive array of dining options. The north end between Charles and Venables streets offers particular concentration, though the south end also tempts with numerous restaurants.
Michelin-Recognized Excellence
Magari by Oca, located in the 1200-block, exemplifies the neighborhood's elevated dining scene. Formerly Oca Pastificio, this intimate establishment features hand-shaped pasta prepared at a bar and dressed with seasonal ingredients. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand in 2022, praising its "bistro charm," authenticity, and simplicity. With black-and-white tile flooring and chalkboard menus, Magari by Oca operates walk-in only from 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
Institutional Favorites
Havana at 1212 Commercial Drive has been a neighborhood institution since 1996. This Cuban-style restaurant and arts venue offers mojitos, brunch dishes, and a massive patio in a tropical-oasis setting. The 2022 renovation preserved its graffiti wall and bohemian spirit while adding a renovated "flamingo room" performance space. Hours extend from morning to late evening throughout the week.
The Portuguese Club of Vancouver at 1144 Commercial Drive provides old-world charm with homestyle Portuguese cooking. Specialties include grilled sardines, prawns Piri-Piri, Bacalho, and Bitoque with fried egg and Portuguese fries. Founded on Kingsway in 1962, it maintains limited hours Wednesday through Sunday.
Global Flavors, Local Character
Beyond these highlights, Commercial Drive now features Indian, Japanese, Filipino, and other international cuisines ranging from casual to upscale. The Michelin-recognized Lunch Lady adds Vietnamese excellence to the mix, while numerous other establishments contribute to what has become one of Vancouver's most dynamic dining corridors.
As Reimer observes from her decades of experience, the essence of Commercial Drive persists even as its culinary offerings diversify. The neighborhood remains unconventional and community-oriented, proving that strong local identity can adapt to changing times while preserving what makes it special.
