WestJet Airlines has announced a new codeshare agreement with Icelandair, aimed at providing passengers with more convenient access to European destinations. The partnership, effective immediately, allows travelers to book a single ticket for flights connecting through Reykjavik, Iceland, to various cities across Europe.
Details of the Agreement
Under the terms of the deal, WestJet customers can now connect to Icelandair flights to over 20 European destinations, including London, Paris, Amsterdam, and Copenhagen. The codeshare arrangement simplifies the booking process, offering seamless itineraries and coordinated baggage handling.
WestJet's Boeing 787 Dreamliners will operate from major Canadian hubs such as Calgary, Vancouver, and Toronto to Reykjavik, where passengers can transfer to Icelandair's network. The partnership is expected to boost tourism and business travel between Canada and Europe.
Strategic Benefits
This agreement comes as airlines seek to expand their reach without adding new routes. For WestJet, it provides a cost-effective way to offer European destinations without deploying its own aircraft across the Atlantic. Icelandair benefits from increased traffic through its hub in Reykjavik.
Industry analysts note that the deal could intensify competition with Air Canada, which already has a strong transatlantic presence. WestJet aims to capture a larger share of the leisure travel market, particularly among cost-conscious travelers.
Customer Experience
Passengers will enjoy benefits such as unified frequent flyer programs, with WestJet Rewards members able to earn and redeem points on Icelandair flights. The codeshare also includes access to airport lounges and priority boarding for eligible travelers.
WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech stated, "This partnership underscores our commitment to providing affordable and convenient travel options. By teaming up with Icelandair, we are opening up Europe to more Canadians."
Icelandair CEO Bogi Nils Bogason added, "We are excited to welcome WestJet passengers to our network. This collaboration enhances connectivity and strengthens ties between our regions."
The codeshare agreement is expected to be fully operational by summer 2026, with ticket sales starting immediately. Travelers are advised to check the WestJet website for updated schedules and offers.
