In a heartbreaking incident that has sparked widespread concern, a 2-year-old girl lost her life after being crushed by a power seat in a Hyundai SUV, prompting a massive recall across North America. Police in Akron, Ohio, have released new details about the tragedy, which occurred on March 7, 2026, involving Lucia Ayala, who was pinned under the third-row power seat of a 2026 Hyundai Palisade.
Details of the Tragic Accident
According to authorities, the accident unfolded when the power seat in the vehicle collapsed on the young child. Audio from the 911 call captures the panic of the situation, with a caller urgently reporting, "Ma’am, we have a child under a chair in the car." Bodycam footage from first responders shows the chaotic scene as Lucia's father struggled to free her, explaining to officers, "Right now, I’m trying to put it up. It’s not working. I don’t know because we pulled it up so hard or something."
Bystanders managed to extricate Lucia, but she was not breathing. She was rushed to a local hospital by Akron Fire, where she was pronounced dead. The medical examiner has ruled the death an accident, but the age of the victim has made the case particularly devastating. Akron Police Lt. Michael Murphy expressed the community's grief, stating, "It’s tragic any time we lose someone in our community but especially a child, a very young person who obviously was completely defenceless in an incident like this."
Hyundai's Response and Recall
In response to the incident, Hyundai has issued a recall of more than 68,000 vehicles in the United States and Canada. The company has finalized a software fix for the affected models and has lifted a sales halt on some Palisade units following the recall. This move aims to prevent similar tragedies in the future, as Murphy emphasized the importance of awareness: "We’ve been trying to be open with the community to communicate and try to help and inform people, just to be aware of all the safety features and components in their vehicle so this might not happen to someone else in the future."
The recall underscores critical issues in automotive safety, particularly concerning power seats and child protection. As investigations continue, this case serves as a stark reminder for vehicle owners to regularly check safety features and heed manufacturer recalls to ensure the well-being of all passengers, especially vulnerable children.
