The Ottawa Senators have secured their centre depth for the upcoming season by signing Stephen Halliday to a two-year contract extension worth $1.075 million. The deal, announced on Tuesday, positions the 23-year-old as the likely fourth-line centre for the team next season.
Halliday's Journey to the NHL
Selected 104th overall in the 2022 NHL Draft, Halliday made his NHL debut on November 10 against the Anaheim Ducks, recording an assist. He scored his first career goal on January 22 against the Nashville Predators. In 29 games with the Senators last season, he tallied two goals and 29 points.
Steve Staios, the club's president of hockey operations and general manager, expressed satisfaction with the signing. "Stephen has shown great growth in his game. He is committed to his craft and has a passion for the game," Staios said. "We're pleased to have him signed and excited about what the future brings."
Role and Responsibilities
Halliday is not expected to provide significant offence. His primary role will be to play responsibly at both ends of the ice. The Senators have strong centre depth with Tim Stutzle, Dylan Cozens, and Shane Pinto, so Halliday will head into training camp in September as the fourth-line centre.
A native of Ajax, Ontario, Halliday spent three seasons with the Dubuque Fighting Saints in the USHL from 2019 to 2022, followed by two years with the Ohio State Buckeyes in the NCAA.
Impact on Veteran Players
This signing likely signals the departure of veteran centre Lars Eller, an unrestricted free agent. The Senators are passing the torch to younger players, and Halliday has worked diligently to reach this level. Last summer, the Senators emphasized the need for Halliday to become more physical, and he worked on that aspect of his game with Ottawa development coach Sam Gagner in Muskoka.
The Senators' management is confident in Halliday's continued development and his ability to contribute to the team's success in the coming seasons.
