The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed defenceman Emil Andrae to a two-year contract, the team announced Saturday. The deal carries an average annual cap hit of $1.55 million US for the restricted free agent, who was acquired from the Philadelphia Flyers last week as part of the trade that sent goaltender Joseph Woll to Philadelphia.
Andrae's Background and Performance
Andrae, a 24-year-old Swedish native, was a second-round pick by the Flyers in the 2020 NHL Draft. In 61 games last season, he recorded 13 points (goals and assists). Over his 107-game NHL career, all with Philadelphia, he has accumulated 20 points. The left-shot blueliner is known for his puck-moving abilities despite his 5-foot-9 frame.
Impact on Maple Leafs' Defensive Depth
Andrae's signing adds to the Leafs' ongoing defensive rebuild this summer. Toronto previously executed a sign-and-trade for defenceman Darren Raddysh, further bolstering their back end. However, Andrae's exact role in the starting lineup remains uncertain. General Manager John Chayka has expressed confidence in veteran Morgan Rielly staying with the team amid persistent trade rumours.
Salary Cap Considerations
With Andrae's contract, the Maple Leafs are now approximately $2.8 million over the NHL salary cap, a situation that must be resolved by opening night in October. The team may need to make additional roster moves to comply with the cap.
Other Defensive Questions
Chris Tanev, who underwent core muscle surgery, is approaching age 37 and his full recovery remains a question. The Leafs also plan to audition several Marlies defencemen during training camp, including Ben Danford, William Villeneuve, and Noah Chadwick.
According to Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun, the signing improves the Leafs' depth on defence as they prepare for the upcoming season.
