Air Canada has announced the acquisition of 30 new Airbus A321XLR aircraft, each featuring 14 lie-flat seats on a single-aisle plane. This makes the airline the first in Canada to offer such horizontal seating, which will be available in its newly designed Signature Class premium cabins starting this summer.
First Delivery Received
On Friday, the company confirmed it had taken delivery of its first Airbus A321XLR from Hamburg, Germany. The next-generation single-aisle aircraft is engineered for longer routes with enhanced fuel efficiency and passenger comfort. The aircraft was leased from SMBC Aviation Capital and is the first of 30 total A321XLR planes being added to Air Canada’s fleet over the coming years. Of these, 15 are leased and 15 are acquired directly from Airbus S.A.S.
Strategic Growth
Mark Galardo, executive vice-president and chief commercial officer, stated in a press release: “Air Canada is building one of the most modern and capable fleets in the industry. The Airbus A321XLR introduces a dynamic new component to Air Canada’s growth strategy, greatly expanding our flexibility to launch new international routes and improve our offering on existing markets.”
The aircraft will be deployed across the Atlantic from Montreal and Toronto, while also becoming a staple on key North American transcontinental routes. Galardo described the plane as “game-changing” for the airline’s network.
Innovative Cabin Design
Air Canada is also debuting its new “Glowing Hearted cabin standard” on the A321XLR, featuring an “unmistakably Canadian welcome” design. Passengers will be greeted by a backlit canopy of maple leaves upon boarding, reflecting a distinctly Canadian aesthetic.
The airline plans to integrate the aircraft into its schedule progressively, pending Transport Canada certification and entry into service. This delivery marks the latest step in Air Canada’s fleet modernization program, which aims to improve fuel efficiency compared to older-generation aircraft.
