Mission Retirement Home Engulfed in Flames, Residents Evacuated Amid Safety Concerns

A significant fire has erupted at a retirement home in Mission, British Columbia, prompting the urgent evacuation of all residents as emergency crews battle to contain the inferno. The blaze, which broke out at the Chartwell Carrington House retirement home on 7th Avenue, has created a chaotic scene with authorities still working to confirm the safety of every individual.

Emergency Response and Evacuation Efforts

According to Mission RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Harrison Mohr, firefighters were actively combating the fire as of 7:45 p.m., striving to bring it under control. Residents are being transported by bus to the Mission Leisure Centre, where they will receive temporary shelter and assistance. However, the process of accounting for all residents remains ongoing and challenging.

"Staff from the retirement residence are still in the process of trying to confirm whether everyone was safely evacuated," Mohr stated. "This process may take some time due to the ongoing process of transporting everyone to the leisure centre." The uncertainty has heightened concerns for the well-being of the elderly residents, many of whom may have mobility or health issues.

Road Closures and Public Safety Advisories

In response to the emergency, 7th Avenue has been closed in both directions between Cedar Street and Briskham Street to facilitate the work of first responders. Mohr urged the public to avoid the area to ensure that emergency operations can proceed without hindrance and to help identify any remaining evacuees.

"For the time being please avoid the area to allow first responders to continue their work, and to ensure any remaining evacuees are easily identified," he emphasized. The closure is expected to remain in effect until the situation is stabilized and all safety checks are completed.

Details About the Affected Facility

Chartwell Carrington House is a pet-friendly retirement home that features 126 units of various sizes spread across two buildings. It is important to note that the fire is not at the nearby Chartwell Carrington House Retirement Residence, clarifying any potential confusion about the location. The cause of the fire is currently unknown, and investigations will likely commence once the blaze is extinguished. The priority remains on ensuring the safety and care of the evacuated residents, with local authorities and Chartwell staff coordinating efforts to provide updates and support to families.
