Early Morning Apartment Fire in Northeast Edmonton Sends One to Hospital

One individual was hospitalized following a significant apartment fire that erupted in northeast Edmonton early Monday morning. The incident occurred at the Wyndham Crossing Apartments, located near 137 Avenue and 50 Street, prompting a swift response from emergency crews.

Fire Response and Evacuation Efforts

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) received the initial report at 5:33 a.m. on April 20, 2026. Firefighters arrived on the scene just six minutes later, encountering visible flames and heavy smoke emanating from one section of the building. In response, EFRS called for backup and immediately initiated evacuation procedures to ensure the safety of all residents.

The fire was brought under control by 6:48 a.m., although crews continued to work on extinguishing remaining hot spots. Despite the containment to a few suites in the southwest corner of the complex, the entire building was evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Injuries and Displacement

One person was transported to the hospital by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) for treatment. Additionally, a firefighter was assessed by paramedics at the scene, but no other injuries were reported. The evacuation left hundreds of residents displaced, as power could not be isolated to unaffected areas of the building, complicating re-entry efforts.

Traffic Disruptions and Ongoing Investigation

Police advised morning commuters to avoid the intersection of 50 Street and 137 Avenue due to the ongoing emergency operations. EFRS investigators are currently working to determine the cause of the fire, with no immediate details released. The incident underscores the challenges faced by first responders in urban residential settings during such emergencies.
