A Carnival Cruise passenger has died after jumping overboard from his stateroom balcony while the ship was sailing in the Bahamas on Wednesday. The incident occurred as the Carnival Liberty was traveling from Celebration Key, Carnival's exclusive island in Grand Bahama, to Nassau, according to People magazine.
Incident Details
Crew members responded quickly, launching a search and rescue operation. The male passenger was retrieved from the water but was pronounced dead, a Carnival spokesperson confirmed. The cruise line is providing support to the man's family, who were reportedly traveling with him.
According to CruiseMapper, the Carnival Liberty was on a seven-day round-trip voyage from New Orleans to the Bahamas. The ship departed the Port of Louisiana on May 10 and is scheduled to return on May 17, with stops in Key West, Florida, Celebration Key, and Nassau.
Recent Tragedies on Carnival Ships
This death comes less than a week after another Carnival Cruise passenger died in the Bahamas. Last Saturday, an 88-year-old American woman lost control of her mobility scooter and plunged off the pier at Celebration Key. A Carnival spokesperson told People that the Carnival Celebration was docked at the port during the incident. The Royal Bahamas Police Force believes the elderly woman struck her head against the hull of the vessel before landing in the water.
Last month, a woman aboard the Carnival Firenze fell from her stateroom balcony and landed on a deck below while the ship was near Catalina Island, California, on April 27. Carnival stated that the woman was traveling with family, who alerted the crew.
On April 17, a passenger in his 70s aboard the Carnival Splendor, traveling toward Sydney, Australia, apparently climbed over a safety railing and jumped, according to the Brisbane Times. Australian officials conducted a search but were unable to locate him.
Carnival's Response
Carnival Cruise Line has expressed condolences and is cooperating with authorities. The company emphasized that it is providing support to the affected families. These incidents have raised concerns about passenger safety on cruise ships, though Carnival has not announced any policy changes.
