A cameraman for the CBS Evening News experienced a sudden medical emergency and collapsed while the program was broadcasting live from Taiwan early Thursday morning. The incident occurred during the final segment of the newscast, causing an abrupt interruption.
On-Air Incident Details
Anchor Tony Dokoupil was speaking about geopolitical topics when a loud thud was heard off-camera. Dokoupil paused mid-sentence, asking, “You will hear a lot about American decline and the rise of a powerful new China. The Chinese certainly... Is he okay?” After a brief moment of confusion, he addressed the situation directly: “We’re gonna take a quick break. We have a medical emergency here. We’re calling a doctor.”
The broadcast then cut to a commercial break. When the program returned, CBS News chief correspondent Matt Gutman anchored the remainder of the show from New York City, concluding the broadcast without further incident.
Official Statement
Following the broadcast, CBS News released a statement regarding the cameraman’s condition: “Tonight during the final segment of CBS Evening News, our cameraman on set suffered a medical emergency. Thankfully, he’s okay and recovering.” The network did not disclose the cameraman’s identity or provide specifics about the medical issue.
Paramount, CBS’s parent company, did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the cameraman’s identity or condition.
Context of the Broadcast
The CBS Evening News team was reporting from Taiwan rather than Beijing due to reported visa issues. The incident drew significant attention on social media, with clips of the moment circulating widely.
