Tire Rupture Blamed in Death of Kanata Auto Shop Employee

The Kanata auto repair community is mourning the loss of Jordan Junger, a young employee who died after a tire he was inflating ruptured in what the shop owner described as a 'freak accident.'

Details of the Incident

On May 9, at approximately 1:40 p.m., emergency responders were called to Kanata Wheels on Edgewater Street. Jordan Junger, in his early 20s, was found seriously injured in one of the mechanical bays. Paramedics attempted to stabilize him at the scene and during transport to hospital, but he was declared dead upon arrival.

Ottawa Police Service spokesperson Julie Kavanagh stated that police do not believe the incident was suspicious. However, they are supporting the Ontario Ministry of Labour investigation into the workplace tragedy.

Shop Owner's Statement

In a statement released on Thursday, shop owner Tariq In’airat confirmed that Junger's death resulted from injuries caused by a ruptured tire. 'Losing Jordan due to a freak accident at our facility was tragic and devastating,' In’airat wrote. He explained that the fatal injuries occurred when 'the steel belts around the brand-new tire bead shifted relative to the rubber while Jordan was inflating the tire.'

In’airat described Junger as 'far more than a coworker' and said he was 'family to all of us.' He added, 'He brought kindness, dedication, laughter and friendship into our workplace every day, and his presence left a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.'

Community Response

Ottawa Paramedic Service spokesperson Marc-Antoine Deschamps noted that despite efforts to save him, Junger succumbed to his injuries. Kavanagh expressed condolences, saying, 'Our thoughts are with the young man’s family, friends and colleagues.'

The loss has deeply affected the Kanata Wheels team. In’airat emphasized that Junger will 'never be forgotten and will remain a permanent memory in our hearts.' Funeral arrangements are to be announced later.

This incident highlights the dangers present in auto repair work, particularly when dealing with high-pressure tire inflation. The Ministry of Labour investigation aims to determine if any safety protocols were violated and to prevent future tragedies.
