A 37-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of two young children whose bodies were discovered inside a vehicle in northwest Calgary on Thursday.
Accused Appears in Court
Mussie Mengisteab, 37, faces two counts of first-degree murder. He appeared before a Justice of the Peace in a Calgary courtroom on Friday, and the case was adjourned to Monday. According to court filings, the alleged offenses occurred on Wednesday.
Details of the Incident
Police received a call Thursday morning that led them to a vehicle in the 4300 block of 14th Street N.W., where they found the bodies of two children. The victims are believed to be under the age of 10, according to Staff Sgt. Darren Smith. A man found near the vehicle was taken into custody.
The nature of the man's relationship to the victims remains unknown. Police closed a section of 14th Street N.W. north of John Laurie Boulevard to traffic, cordoning off the area with yellow tape as officers investigated.
