Lehi Pediatric Hospital Expands After Two Years

Intermountain Health Primary Children's Hospital – Miller Family Campus in Lehi, Utah, is undergoing a significant expansion just two years after its initial opening in 2024. This rapid growth is a direct response to the escalating demand for pediatric trauma care and specialized services in Utah County and Southern Salt Lake County, where communities are experiencing substantial population increases.

Meeting the Needs of a Growing Region

Since its debut, the hospital has established itself as a vital healthcare access point, caring for tens of thousands of children. The facility recently marked its second anniversary with a ribbon-cutting ceremony to inaugurate eight new medical-surgical beds, enhancing patient access. Later this year, the expansion will continue with the addition of six new newborn intensive care unit (NICU) rooms. These developments are projected to boost the hospital's total inpatient capacity by approximately 20 percent, addressing the urgent needs of families in the surrounding areas.

Impactful Patient Care Statistics

The hospital's first two years of operation have been marked by remarkable service delivery, demonstrating its critical role in the region. Key statistics from this period include:

  • Trauma cases: 1,107
  • Surgical cases: 11,879
  • Patient days: 30,372
  • Emergency department visits: 39,872
  • Clinic visits: 145,099

Lisa Paletta, president of Intermountain Primary Children's Hospital – Miller Family Campus, emphasized that these figures represent more than just patient volume. "They represent families who no longer must travel long distances for specialized pediatric care, and children receiving timely treatment in moments that matter most closer to their home and families," she stated.

A Life-Saving Case Study

The hospital's impact is vividly illustrated by the experience of 17-year-old Max Braithwaite. Following a severe motocross accident in Delta, Utah, Max was being airlifted to Intermountain Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City when his condition became unstable mid-flight. The flight team made a critical decision to reroute and land at the Miller Family Campus in Lehi, saving an estimated ten minutes that proved crucial for his survival.

"They completely saved his life," said Max's mother, Ashley. "He wouldn't have made it to Salt Lake." During his hospital stay, caregivers also diagnosed Max with a previously undetected chronic condition, Type 1 diabetes, highlighting the comprehensive care provided. Max has since continued to receive follow-up care, including rehabilitation services for his injuries and specialized diabetes management, all conveniently located near his home in Saratoga Springs.

Community and Family Benefits

Ashley expressed deep gratitude for the hospital's proximity and quality of care. "The hospital is close to my home because I live in Saratoga Springs and so it's close and convenient. Everybody there has just been friendly and so supportive, and it's just well organized, well run. We're very grateful for their care that Max received," she remarked. This sentiment underscores the broader community benefits of having specialized pediatric services readily accessible, reducing travel burdens and ensuring timely medical interventions for children in critical situations.

The expansion of Intermountain Health Primary Children's Hospital – Miller Family Campus reflects a proactive approach to healthcare infrastructure, aligning with the demographic shifts and growing needs of Utah's vibrant communities. As the hospital continues to evolve, it stands as a testament to the importance of localized, high-quality pediatric care in enhancing health outcomes and supporting families across the region.
