The Steelworkers Humanity Fund (SHF) has announced a significant humanitarian initiative, partnering with USW locals to provide $15,950 in relief funds for Cuba. This effort aims to address critical shortages in medical supplies and equipment, exacerbated by a combination of long-standing economic challenges and recent crises.
Addressing a Deepening Humanitarian Crisis
Cuba is facing an increasingly dire situation, with 66 years of economic embargo compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic and a recent U.S.-led energy blockade. These factors have led to severe consequences for the population, including transportation shortages, reduced working hours, flight cancellations, and widespread electricity blackouts. Notably, island-wide blackouts have severely impacted hospitals, hindering access to essential healthcare services.
Solidarity Through Sport and Donations
In response to this crisis, the SHF collaborated with USW Local 7536 as part of the fifth-annual Steelworkers Basketball Classic tournament. The event invited USW locals and other unions to donate funds in a show of international solidarity. The SHF has agreed to match these contributions, resulting in a total of $15,950 being directed to Containers 4 Cuba, an organization focused on delivering aid to the region.
Marty Warren, SHF President and USW National Director, expressed gratitude for the initiative, stating, "What a moving gesture! We’re so grateful to our USW members who make the connection between sport and solidarity. Steelworkers really do make great neighbours!" This partnership highlights the power of collective action in addressing global humanitarian needs.
Background and Ongoing Efforts
Founded in 1985, the Steelworkers Humanity Fund is a registered charitable organization dedicated to international development and emergency assistance, while also supporting communities across Canada. Contributions primarily come from USW members through collective agreement provisions, with some employers matching these donations. The fund's latest initiative underscores its commitment to leveraging worker solidarity for impactful relief efforts worldwide.
The SHF has extended thanks to all local unions, Steelworkers, and other contributors who participated in this cause, emphasizing that the $15,950 will fund life-saving medical supplies and equipment for Cuba. This effort not only provides immediate aid but also fosters a sense of global community and support during challenging times.
