Calgary police have charged a man for selling drugs to an individual who subsequently died of a drug overdose. The investigation began in April, one month after authorities learned about the suspect believed to have supplied the narcotics.
Investigation Details
Police launched their inquiry in April, following reports of a suspected drug dealer linked to a man found dead in January. The deceased had reportedly purchased drugs from the accused prior to his fatal overdose.
Seized Evidence
During a raid on the suspect's residence in the 2500 block of 49 Avenue S.E., officers confiscated 151.9 grams of hydromorphone, 7.5 grams of methamphetamine, and 6.6 grams of fentanyl. Additionally, a stolen e-bike valued at over $9,000 was recovered and returned to its rightful owner.
Charges Filed
Jesse Kabatoff, 44, of Calgary, has been arrested and faces four counts of drug trafficking, five counts of possession of property obtained by crime, and three counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.
Overdose Death Investigation
Police state that insufficient evidence exists to charge Kabatoff directly with the overdose death. However, the evidence gathered during the investigation identified drug traffickers who had prior contact with the deceased, enabling authorities to advance their probe.
Authorities continue to urge anyone with information about drug trafficking activities to come forward.
