OPP Issues Warning After Possible Cougar Sighting Near Smiths Falls
Cougar sighting reported near Smiths Falls, OPP warns

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have issued a public safety alert for residents in and around Smiths Falls following a report of a possible cougar sighting on Sunday.

Police Urge Vigilance After Sunday Sighting

According to the Lanark County OPP detachment, the potential sighting occurred on Ponnamalie Sideroad. The police force took to social media around noon on December 7, 2025, to disseminate the warning, urging the community to exercise heightened caution.

The advisory specifically highlighted the need for families with small children or pets to be extra vigilant when outdoors. "Please do not approach the cougar, keep a safe distance, and exercise caution outdoors," the OPP stated clearly in their online post.

Authorities Mobilize Response

In response to the report, the OPP has notified the Ministry of Natural Resources, which is now actively monitoring the situation. This inter-agency coordination is standard protocol for handling sightings of large predators in populated areas.

The police have provided two critical contact numbers for the public:

  • 911 for immediate emergencies.
  • 1-888-310-1122, the non-emergency line for the OPP.

Safety Guidelines for Residents

While cougar attacks are extremely rare in Ontario, the OPP emphasizes the importance of proactive safety measures. Residents are advised to:

Keep a safe distance if you spot the animal. Do not attempt to approach it or lure it closer.

Be particularly mindful during dawn and dusk, when cougars are most active.

Ensure pets are kept on leashes or supervised closely, and avoid leaving pet food outside which could attract wildlife.

The OPP's warning serves as a precautionary measure to ensure community awareness and safety while authorities assess the validity of the sighting and the potential presence of the animal in the Smiths Falls area.
