The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is investigating the removal of deer from Marineland, as questions swirl about the animals' whereabouts and welfare. Carole Lyne Laramee, a former visitor, says she is worried about a deer named Snuggles.
CFIA Investigation Underway
The CFIA confirmed it is looking into the removal of deer from the Niagara Falls, Ont., attraction. The agency said it is 'aware of concerns' and is 'actively investigating' the matter. Marineland has not commented on the investigation.
Laramee, who visited Marineland multiple times, said she became attached to a red deer she named Snuggles. She said the deer was friendly and would come to the fence for treats. Laramee said she was told by staff that the deer had been removed, but she was not given a reason.
Questions About Deer Welfare
The investigation comes after reports of deer being removed from the park, with some former employees alleging the animals were sold or euthanized. Marineland has a history of animal welfare concerns, including a 2020 investigation by the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) that found no evidence of animal cruelty.
However, the park has faced criticism from animal rights groups, who have called for its closure. The CFIA investigation is focused on the removal of the deer, but it is not clear if any charges will be laid.
Marineland's Response
Marineland has not responded to requests for comment. The park's website says it is 'committed to the highest standards of animal care.' However, critics say the park has a history of neglecting animals.
Laramee said she hopes the investigation will shed light on what happened to Snuggles and other deer. 'I just want to know if she's okay,' she said.
