Stolen Gong Returned to Kitchener Hospital Cancer Centre

Waterloo Regional Police have recovered a ceremonial gong that was stolen from a Kitchener hospital's cancer centre last month. The gong, which holds deep emotional significance for patients celebrating milestones in their cancer recovery, was found on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, in the area of Victoria St. N. and Weber St. W., less than two kilometres from the hospital.

Gong Returned to Grand River Cancer Centre

The gong was promptly returned to the Waterloo Regional Health Network's Grand River Cancer Centre. Police released a photo showing hospital staff and officers smiling alongside the recovered gong. The item had been reported stolen on April 27 from the cancer centre.

Suspect Arrested and Charged

A 44-year-old man, whose identity has not been disclosed, was arrested and charged with theft under $5,000 on Monday, May 4. He was held for a bail hearing. According to police, the theft occurred on April 25 at approximately 10:50 p.m., when the suspect allegedly took the gong from the cancer centre. Initially, officers were unsure of the gong's whereabouts following the arrest.

Hospital Officials Express Relief

Desa Hobbs, vice-president of patient care and regional vice-president of the Waterloo Wellington Regional Cancer Program, stated on Monday that the gong holds significant meaning for patients as they mark important milestones in their cancer journey. She emphasized that the gong represents resilience, hope, and the strength of patients. The gong is traditionally rung to signify the end of cancer treatments.
