Windstorm Sparks Weather Statement Along Coquihalla Corridor

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement warning drivers of strong and gusting southwesterly winds that could make driving treacherous throughout Sunday. The alert covers a significant portion of British Columbia's Interior, including key transportation routes.

Affected Areas and Driving Hazards

The weather statement, released Sunday morning, specifically targets the Coquihalla Highway (Highway 5) from Hope to Kamloops, along with Highway 3 and regions further east in the Kootenays. The advisory extends across a broad swath of the B.C. Interior, encompassing the South Thompson, Shuswap, Nicola, Okanagan Connector from Merritt to Kelowna, Manning, Skagit Valley, Similkameen, Okanagan Valley, Boundary region, and both East and West Kootenay including Cranbrook.

Environment Canada explained that a cold front associated with a strong low-pressure system passing through northern British Columbia is sweeping across the southern Interior, creating these hazardous conditions.

Safety Precautions and Expected Duration

Drivers, particularly those operating high-sided vehicles, are advised to exercise extreme caution as winds could push vehicles around. The weather agency recommends securing loose objects and preparing for sudden changes in mountain weather that may lead to dangerous driving situations.

The statement also warns residents to prepare for possible disruptions to transportation, services, and utilities throughout the affected regions.

These gusty conditions are expected to persist through Sunday but should ease in the evening as the weather system moves out of the area. For real-time updates on road conditions, drivers are encouraged to check DriveBC.ca.

The weather alert comes as a reminder of the challenging driving conditions that can develop rapidly in British Columbia's mountainous regions, particularly during seasonal transitions when weather systems can intensify quickly.
