Toronto has cancelled the FIFA World Cup watch party scheduled for Thursday, July 2, 2026, at Nathan Phillips Square due to extreme heat conditions. The city announced the cancellation Wednesday evening as a heat wave continues to blanket much of Ontario, with temperatures forecast to hit 35°C and humidex values approaching 40.
Heat Warning and Health Risks
Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for Toronto, warning of dangerously hot and humid conditions that pose significant health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations. The cancellation aims to prevent heat-related illnesses among attendees, as prolonged exposure to such conditions can lead to heat stroke or exhaustion.
“The health and safety of residents and visitors is our top priority,” a city spokesperson said. “With extreme heat expected, we decided to cancel the watch party to avoid any risk to the public.”
Impact on Events
The watch party was set to feature the Round of 16 match between Switzerland and Algeria. Organizers had expected thousands of fans to gather at the square. The city is advising people to stay indoors, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbours during the heat wave.
Cooling centres across Toronto remain open, and the city has extended pool and splash pad hours to help residents beat the heat. No new date has been announced for the watch party.
