Eight campers were hospitalized, one in unstable condition, after a tornado touched down at Dillberry Lake Provincial Campground in eastern Alberta on Wednesday night, according to officials. Witnesses described the sky swirling as the tornado struck without warning.
Campers Describe Terrifying Moments
Campers at the provincial park reported sudden chaos as the tornado swept through the area. 'The whole sky started swirling,' said one camper who was at the site. Emergency services responded quickly, transporting the injured to nearby hospitals. Alberta Health Services confirmed that eight individuals were taken for treatment, with one person listed in unstable condition.
Weather Warnings and Response
Environment Canada had issued severe thunderstorm watches for parts of Alberta earlier in the day, but the tornado struck with little advance notice. The agency is investigating the event to determine the tornado's strength and path. Local authorities urged residents to stay vigilant as storms continued to move through the region.
Dillberry Lake Provincial Park, located about 200 kilometers southeast of Edmonton, is a popular camping destination. The park was evacuated following the tornado, and officials are assessing damage to infrastructure and campsites.
