Severe thunderstorms swept across the Greater Toronto Area on July 9, 2026, bringing heavy rain, damaging winds, and causing widespread power outages and flooding, CP24 reported.

Power Outages and Flooding Reported

Hydro One reported over 50,000 customers without power at the peak of the storm, with outages concentrated in Toronto, Mississauga, and Brampton. Toronto Hydro also reported thousands of customers affected, particularly in the downtown core and Scarborough. Flooding was reported on major roads, including the Don Valley Parkway and sections of the Gardiner Expressway, where water levels rose rapidly.

Emergency Response and Safety

Toronto Fire Services responded to multiple calls for basement flooding and downed power lines. Police advised residents to avoid non-essential travel and to stay away from flooded areas. The Toronto Transit Commission reported delays on several streetcar and bus routes due to flooding and debris. No injuries were immediately reported.

“We are urging everyone to stay safe and avoid driving through flooded streets. Turn around, don’t drown,” said a Toronto Police spokesperson.

Impact and Aftermath

The storm also caused damage to trees and property, with reports of downed trees blocking roads in several neighborhoods. Pearson International Airport reported delays of up to 45 minutes for arriving flights due to the weather. Restoration of power was expected to continue into the evening, with crews working to clear debris and repair damaged infrastructure.
