Environment Canada has issued a warning about significant snowfall expected in the Rocky Mountains and foothills over the May long weekend, which could impact travel plans for many residents.
Heaviest Snowfall on Saturday
According to the weather agency, the heaviest snowfall is predicted to occur on Saturday, but snow is likely to persist through much of the weekend near the mountains. Some areas may begin to see snow as early as Thursday night.
Uncertainty in Snowfall Amounts
In a statement released Thursday afternoon, Environment Canada noted that snowfall amounts remain highly uncertain. However, up to 20 centimeters could accumulate in higher terrain and along the Trans-Canada Highway west of Calgary. The snow could extend as far east as Calgary by Saturday morning.
Travelers are advised to monitor forecasts and prepare for potentially hazardous road conditions, especially in mountain passes and higher elevations.
