Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for parts of central and southern Alberta, including Calgary, as unstable air moves into the region this afternoon. The weather agency warns that conditions are favorable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms capable of producing heavy rain, strong wind gusts, and hail.
Timing and Affected Areas
The thunderstorms are expected to develop after 2 p.m. MDT and persist into the evening hours. Affected areas include Calgary, Red Deer, Lethbridge, and surrounding communities. Residents are advised to monitor weather alerts and be prepared to take shelter if a warning is issued.
Potential Hazards
The storms could bring localized flooding due to intense rainfall rates, damaging wind gusts up to 90 km/h, and hail up to the size of quarters. Lightning strikes are also a concern, and people are urged to avoid open fields and bodies of water during the storm.
Safety Precautions
Officials recommend securing loose outdoor objects, staying indoors during the storm, and avoiding travel if possible. Motorists should be cautious of reduced visibility and standing water on roads.
The severe weather threat is expected to diminish after midnight as the system moves eastward. Environment Canada will continue to monitor the situation and update warnings as necessary.
