Huntsville residents are being urged to avoid non-essential travel after severe storms swept through the area, leaving downed trees and hydro poles in their wake. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) issued the warning as crews work to clear debris and restore power.
Storm Damage and Safety Warnings
The storms, which hit on May 19, 2026, caused significant damage across Huntsville. Downed trees blocked roads, and several hydro poles were snapped, leading to power outages. The OPP advised residents to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary to allow emergency crews to respond and to avoid potential hazards.
“We are asking everyone to avoid non-essential travel at this time,” said an OPP spokesperson. “Crews are working diligently to clear the roads and restore power, but the situation remains dangerous.”
Power Outages and Cleanup Efforts
Local utility companies are assessing the damage and working to restore electricity to affected areas. Residents are advised to report any downed power lines and to treat them as live and dangerous. The cleanup is expected to continue through the day, with full restoration possibly taking longer in hard-hit areas.
The storm also caused localized flooding in some low-lying areas. Motorists are reminded to never drive through flooded roads, as water depths can be deceptive.
Authorities will provide updates as conditions improve. Residents are encouraged to check on neighbors, especially the elderly and those with medical needs, and to have emergency kits ready in case of extended outages.
