Residents of Edmonton were greeted with a classic holiday scene on Christmas morning, as a significant layer of fresh snow covered the city, transforming it into a winter wonderland.
Heavy Snowfall Creates Festive Atmosphere
The picturesque conditions were the result of a storm that began on Christmas Eve. Environment Canada reported accumulations of 10 to 15 centimetres, with snow continuing to fall through the afternoon and into the evening. The federal weather agency took the step of issuing a yellow-level snowfall warning, urging caution for holiday travellers as the storm was expected to significantly reduce visibility on roadways.
Forecast and Frigid Conditions Follow the Storm
While the major snowfall had passed by Christmas Day, Environment Canada's forecast for the city included a 30 per cent chance of lingering flurries into Thursday morning. The evening was expected to be cloudy with a higher, 60 per cent chance of flurries overnight.
The day brought biting cold to accompany the fresh snow. Forecasters predicted a high temperature of only -16 C, with winds up to 15 km/h creating a harsh wind chill. The daytime wind chill was expected to make it feel like -24 C, plummeting to near -25 C overnight.
Road Conditions Across the Region
According to the latest reports from 511 Alberta, the majority of roads within Edmonton's city limits were listed with no major issues immediately following the storm. However, conditions on surrounding highways varied.
The website indicated that Highway 216 was partly covered in snow and ice, with secondary hazards including drifting snow, icy sections, and snow-covered shoulders. Meanwhile, the section from Junction 34 Ave Northwest to Junction Highway 16 was reported as cleared, though drivers were advised to watch for potential black ice, slippery patches, and shoulder snow.
The combination of fresh snowfall and plunging temperatures served as a reminder of Alberta's dynamic winter weather, providing a white Christmas while also demanding careful travel for those visiting family and friends during the holiday season.
