At least 96 people have been killed in northern India after severe dust storms accompanied by lightning and heavy rain swept through several states. The storms, which struck on Wednesday night and continued into Thursday, caused widespread destruction, including wall collapses, uprooted trees, and power outages.
Worst-Hit Areas
The most affected states include Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Punjab. In Uttar Pradesh alone, at least 76 people died, many due to lightning strikes and collapsing structures. In Prayagraj, a wall collapse killed 24-year-old Summit Yadav, as neighbors rushed to help. Rajasthan reported 18 deaths, with additional casualties in Punjab.
Government Response
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and announced compensation for the victims' families. State governments have been directed to provide immediate relief and medical aid to the injured. The India Meteorological Department warned of more storms in the coming days, urging residents to stay indoors.
Local hospitals are overwhelmed with casualties, and rescue teams are working to clear debris and restore power. The storms, unusual for this time of year, have been linked to changing weather patterns and climate change, experts say.
