Expansion plan draws fire from local officials
Warwick Township is pushing back against a proposed expansion of the Twin Creeks Landfill, citing environmental risks and community impacts. The landfill, located near Watford, Ont., has been in operation for years, but a new application to expand its footprint has alarmed local leaders and residents.
Township officials argue that the expansion could threaten groundwater quality, increase truck traffic on rural roads, and create long-term environmental liabilities. The landfill's owner, which operates the site, has not yet responded publicly to the concerns.
Environmental impact at the forefront
Residents and environmental groups have raised alarms about potential leachate contamination and odors. According to Warwick Township Mayor, the community is “deeply concerned about the lack of transparency and the potential harm to our water resources.” The mayor added that the township is exploring all legal avenues to oppose the expansion.
The landfill currently accepts waste from across the region, and an expansion would allow it to operate for decades longer. Critics say this contradicts provincial goals to reduce landfill use and increase recycling rates.
Next steps in the regulatory process
The proposal is subject to environmental assessment and municipal approvals. Warwick Township has requested a full review under the Environmental Protection Act. Public meetings are expected in the coming months, and the township has urged residents to voice their concerns.
