B.C. Emergency Alert System Test Set for May 6

B.C. Emergency Alert System Test Scheduled for May 6

British Columbia will conduct a test of its provincial emergency alert system on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at 1:55 p.m., coinciding with Emergency Preparedness Week. Residents across the province should expect to receive alerts on their smartphones, televisions, and radios. The alert will be clearly marked as a test and requires no action from the public.

What to Expect During the Test

The test alert will produce a distinct tone on mobile devices and display a message confirming it is only a drill. Television and radio broadcasts will also carry the test. Officials emphasize that this is a routine exercise to ensure the system functions correctly before any real emergency occurs.

To receive the test alert, your phone must be powered on, connected to an LTE cellular network, not set to 'do not disturb' or airplane mode, compatible with wireless public alerting, and updated with the latest software. The alert will only reach devices within the broadcast area.

History and Expansion of the Alert System

British Columbia first launched its emergency alert system in April 2018. Initially used for tsunami warnings, the system was expanded in 2022 to include imminent threats from floods, wildfires, landslides, and extreme heat emergencies. Since then, the federal government has also introduced an earthquake early-warning system for the province.

Environment and Climate Change Canada can issue alerts for tornadoes, hurricanes, severe thunderstorms, and storm surges. Natural Resources Canada can automatically issue earthquake alerts when certain thresholds are met, warning residents before shaking begins. Police may also issue emergency alerts for incidents such as Amber Alerts or public safety threats.
