Calgary is entering flood season with new protections in place for homes and businesses, following the devastating floods of 2013 that caused billions of dollars in damage. The city has implemented a series of measures, including upgraded flood barriers, improved drainage systems, and a voluntary home buyout program for properties in high-risk areas.
Enhanced Flood Barriers
The city has completed construction of new flood barriers along the Bow and Elbow rivers, designed to withstand a 1-in-100-year flood event. These barriers, which include both permanent walls and removable panels, are part of a $1.2 billion investment in flood mitigation infrastructure.
Home Buyout Program
Calgary's voluntary home buyout program has expanded, offering fair market value to homeowners in flood-prone zones. To date, over 200 properties have been acquired, with the land converted to parks and green spaces that can absorb floodwaters.
City officials say the new measures significantly reduce risk, but caution that no system is foolproof. Residents are urged to prepare emergency kits and stay informed during the May-July flood season.
