As a dangerous heatwave sweeps across Ontario and Quebec, with humidex values reaching the 40s, experts are sharing essential tips on how to use air conditioning efficiently to save energy and money. Environment Canada senior climatologist Dave Phillips noted that this heat event is comparable to past extreme heat waves, with high humidity making conditions particularly oppressive.
Optimal AC Temperature Settings
According to energy efficiency experts, setting your thermostat to 24-26°C (75-78°F) when you are home and awake provides the best balance of comfort and energy savings. For every degree you raise your thermostat above 22°C, you can save up to 5% on cooling costs, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Using a programmable thermostat can automate temperature adjustments, raising the setting when you are away or asleep.
Use Fans to Supplement Cooling
Ceiling fans and portable fans can make a room feel up to 4°C cooler, allowing you to set your AC higher without sacrificing comfort. Fans use significantly less electricity than air conditioners. Remember to turn off fans when you leave a room, as they cool people, not spaces.
Maintain Your AC Unit
Regular maintenance is crucial for efficiency. Clean or replace air filters every one to three months, as dirty filters can increase energy consumption by up to 15%. Ensure outdoor condenser units are free of debris and have adequate airflow. Annual professional inspections can identify issues like refrigerant leaks or duct problems that waste energy.
Reduce Heat Gain in Your Home
Close curtains, blinds, or shades during the day to block solar heat. Use weather stripping and caulking to seal leaks around windows and doors. Avoid using ovens, dryers, and other heat-generating appliances during the hottest hours. Instead, cook outdoors or use microwaves and slow cookers.
Consider Alternatives to Central AC
In some cases, window units or portable air conditioners can be more efficient for cooling specific rooms. Energy Star-certified models use about 10% less energy than standard units. For whole-home cooling, heat pumps are increasingly popular as they provide both heating and cooling with high efficiency.
Phillips emphasized that while the current heatwave is severe, following these tips can help residents stay cool without straining their budgets or the power grid. Widespread power outages have already been reported due to high demand.
