Winnipeg is set to begin fogging for mosquitoes after trap counts rose significantly, the city announced. The decision comes as nuisance mosquito numbers exceed thresholds that trigger control measures.
Rising Trap Counts Prompt Action
The city's insect control branch reported that trap counts for nuisance mosquitoes have climbed above the level that warrants fogging. Crews will begin applying a larvicide and adulticide mixture in targeted areas.
According to the city, fogging will occur in the evening hours when mosquitoes are most active, and residents are advised to stay indoors during spraying. The treatment uses a low-concentration pesticide considered safe for humans and pets when applied as directed.
Public Health and Safety Measures
Health officials emphasize that the fogging is a preventive measure to reduce the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses, though West Nile virus remains a concern in the region. The city has not reported any West Nile cases yet this season.
Residents can check the city's website for daily fogging schedules and maps of affected areas. Those with respiratory conditions are advised to keep windows closed during spraying.
