Wildfires Near Boston Bar Force Evacuations, Destroy Structures

The Fraser Valley Regional District upgraded an evacuation alert to an order for 38 more properties on Wednesday night as two out-of-control wildfires near Boston Bar continue to rage, destroying structures at a local resort.

Evacuation Orders and Alerts Expanded

There are now seven evacuation orders affecting hundreds of properties for the Brunswick Creek wildfire, which has grown to more than 26 square kilometres. An evacuation alert remains in effect for the nearby Ainslie Creek wildfire, now mapped at more than 169 square kilometres. Together, the two fires cover more than 200 square kilometres.

Fire officials refer to both blazes as the Brunswick Complex. It is believed that both fires were ignited by humans, according to the B.C. Wildfire Service.

Structures Lost at Blue Lake Resort

In an Instagram post, Shayne Findlay, the operator of Blue Lake Resort, shared video showing that some structures at the resort had been lost. Blue Lake Resort, which features a campground and cabins, is located about 15 kilometres north of Boston Bar.

Fire Behavior and Weather Conditions

In an update Thursday, the B.C. Wildfire Service said firefighters expect the blaze will continue to spread due to warm and dry conditions and high winds. Fire officials noted that some torching of trees along the southern edge of the Brunswick Creek wildfire will be visible from Boston Bar, but the wind is pushing the fire away from communities. Wind gusts of up to 40 kilometres per hour are expected overnight.

Highway 1 Closure

Highway 1 remains closed between Boston Bar Station Road and Ainslie Road North, according to Drive B.C.
