Weekend Rainfall Totals Across Alberta: Up to 100 mm

Environment Canada has released preliminary rainfall totals for Alberta following a wet weekend that brought significant precipitation to much of the province. The heaviest amounts were recorded in central and southern regions, with some communities receiving close to 100 millimetres.

Highest Rainfall Totals Reported

According to Environment Canada meteorologist Josh Classen, the highest rainfall total reported was 98 mm near the town of Sundre, northwest of Calgary. Other notable totals include 85 mm in Red Deer, 72 mm in Lethbridge, and 65 mm in Edmonton. The city of Calgary recorded 58 mm over the weekend.

Classen noted that the rain was widespread, with nearly every region of Alberta receiving at least 20 mm. The precipitation was associated with a slow-moving low-pressure system that stalled over the province.

Impact on Agriculture and Water Resources

The rainfall provided much-needed moisture for farmers and ranchers who had been dealing with dry conditions in some areas. However, the heavy amounts also led to localized flooding in low-lying areas and caused some road closures.

“This was a significant rainfall event for many parts of Alberta,” Classen said. “It will help with soil moisture and reduce wildfire risk, but it also created some hazards for drivers and property owners.”

The precipitation also boosted reservoir levels and stream flows, which had been below average in some watersheds.

Forecast for the Week Ahead

The rain is expected to move out of Alberta by Monday evening, with a return to drier conditions for much of the week. Daytime highs will climb back into the low 20s Celsius by midweek.

Environment Canada advises residents to stay updated on weather alerts as the system departs, and to report any flooding concerns to local authorities.
