Science North is turning trash into treasure with a new exhibition that aims to inspire sustainability through art. The Sudbury-based science center celebrates 42 years with the launch of 'Earth Works: Where Art Meets Action,' transforming everyday plastic waste into powerful artistic statements.
Art Meets Environmental Action
The exhibition features sculptures and installations created entirely from discarded plastics, including bottles, bags, and packaging. Each piece is designed to highlight the environmental impact of plastic pollution while showcasing creative reuse. Visitors can explore works that range from a giant fish made of bottle caps to a forest of plastic-bag trees.
Community Involvement
Local schools and community groups contributed to the collection by collecting plastic waste and even helping create some of the art. Science North officials hope the hands-on approach will encourage visitors to rethink their own consumption habits.
'We want people to see that waste can be beautiful and that small changes in our daily lives can make a big difference,' said a museum spokesperson. The exhibition runs through the summer and includes interactive workshops where participants can make their own recycled art.
Celebrating 42 Years
The launch coincides with Science North's anniversary, marking over four decades of science education in Northern Ontario. The center continues to innovate with exhibits that blend science, technology, and environmental stewardship.
